Theme of the Day – Nutrition – Observing good nutrition is key and it touches all aspects of daily life.
Top Tips –
- “Stick with the protein!”. When I start my day with protein I am FAR less likely to overindulge on nutrient-poor foods.
- Prep – even if it’s just a few days ahead. Having a plan for the day helps direct my actions and remind me of my priorities.
- Win with a workout first! – If I workout first thing, I’m far also less likely to destroy the rest of the day with poor nutrition.
Execution: It’s not easy, but it is critical.
I went out for lunch on Sunday with a group of friends and their children. One husband was medical resident in the middle of a cardiology rotation. We were out to dinner at Grand Lux Cafe as a group. Kids flying all over the place, laughing and catching up. He ordered his favorite dish, but also asked for a to-go box when he ordered. I’ve heard of this strategy before, but watching it executed by a future cardiologist brought it home. “I’ve seen too many people on the operating table,” he said. “The number one cause of heart disease is obesity.“ Plain and simple. I had read all these things before, but actually seeing someone put them into practice was a game changer for me.
Personal Notes: I would evaluate my current nutrition situation as a 6/10. Not terrible, but not great either. I have a strategy to get in my greens and water, but I’m definitely prone to an indulgence or two. I have a taste for sweets and that is often my downfall. I find that hands down, when I have some protein first thing, the rest of my day’s nutrition goes better.
Here’s to tightening up the nutrition game!
